English names

I don't know where they come up with these names.  When I was a student learning a foreign language, my class and I wanted nice names that were actually used in that country.  Chinese students choosing their English names seems to often go like this:

student:  "Teacher, what is this fruit callled in English?"
me:        "We call that dragonfruit"
student  "okay, that will be my English name, because I love this fruit!"
me:     "So you want me to calll you....dragonfruit?
student:     "yes, dragonfruit."

I give up on trying to convince them to adapt to any normal name.  Between just Tim and my classes, we have a Milk, Milky, Lemon, Lime, Tin, Show, Showy, Echoing, Saint Penny, Violin, Silly, Snoopy, Geese, Queen...as well as an array of stripper names like Glitter, Candy, Cherry, Kitty... but my favorite??

Litrine. I know it's not QUITE "Latrine"  but it's just close enough and when you say it out loud...it just makes me laugh.

"You changed your name TO Latrine?"
"Yea, it used to be Sh*t house!"
props to anyone who knows where that line came from.

I have in my class a lovely little fashionista named Aaron.  When I called the name I expected a boy to stand up and when i saw her I kindly pointed out that Aaron is the boys spelling, and that I think she meant to spell her name "Erin".  To which she then explains to me...

"Aaron is a senior boy who I am in love with.  He is musician and is very cool.  I want him to be my boyfriend because I love him.  And so this is why my English name is Aaron. "

aaahhh...ok I guess.  Moving on....these are business students wanting to eventually work with English companies. We will have to talk to them about changing their English names to something more appropriate before they go introducing themselves to business people as "Litrine". But these are names that they have been using for a several years already so I guess I'll let them enjoy it a bit longer.  Besides, I enjoy it too.
